About
Lisa Wisse is well known for her unique depiction of the New Zealand landscape. Icons such as the Pohutukawa and Cabbage tree, and our well-known mountain ranges often appear within advancing and receding planes of rich colour. There is a degree of abstraction and layering in most of Lisa’s works, creating several viewpoints within a single piece. This style of working means that while Lisa does represent actual places she retains a degree of freedom in the presentation of these icons, or landmarks, as she is not bound to the restrains of realism.
Often appearing alongside the landscape aspect in Lisa’s work is several lines of poetry, painted in a flowing hand over the imagery. The poetry, written by Lisa, relates to the work itself and also acts as a visual tool to tie together the multiple images and abstracted forms, which can appear in a single work. It is this loose and comfortable culmination of landscape, colour and verse, which makes Lisa’s style so appealing and unique.
Lisa is also revered for her painted nudes. The colour palette she chooses for this subject matter is most often a combination of sensual reds, skin tones and black, poetry appears frequently alongside the figure studies. These works although instantly recognisable as Lisa’s are a lot less structured than the landscape works, curved lines echo in the figures and in the poetry; which has an overall softening effect. The nude paintings often depict only one figure and are generally on a smaller, more intimate scale than the often large landscape works.
Lisa currently exhibits her work throughout New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the UK. Her work is also in private collections in New York, Australia and the UK. Lisa works with many corporate clients and has been commissioned by some of New Zealand’s leading businesses.
